Vancouver Is The Team to Target Week 3

Week 2 Projections

(Week Ending Oct 22)

Only 3 teams play 4 games next week – Vancouver, Tampa, Detroit.

Anaheim only plays one game next week and it’s on Friday. If you have any fringe Ducks that you can afford to drop, do it after Sunday of this week.

VAN    @OTT    @BOS   @BUF    @DET ***This is the schedule to target in all forms of leagues.

DET     TBL    @TOR    WAS    VAN – Should target due to off night benefits (Read Below)

TBL   @DET   @NJD    @CBJ    PIT – Should not target this schedule.

Vancouver plays on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Arguably three off nights in the NHL schedule. Depending on your pickups you will be able to maximize points based off of having the availability. Buffalo has yet to win a game, Ottawa is 1-0-2 (and lacking Karlsson, Colin White and Oduya, is clearly hurting them). Detroit is 2-1 but have yet to demonstrate any development. Nobody expects much out of Detroit this season. That being said early records are not a strong indicator of overall result.

The argument against the other heavy schedules is also as convincing. Detroit plays Tampa, Toronto (@ Toronto), Washington and matches up with Vancouver. Id suspect a shellacking at the hands of all 3 eastern conference teams in their schedule. The only benefit of this 4 game schedule is that Detroit plays on all 4 off nights. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. The benefit of this is that a pickup will only supplement your lineup and not impede your regulars from gaining your points.

Tampa starts with Detroit (id expect a win) but then faces off against the 3-0 Devils, Columbus and Pittsburgh. Id never bank on a team that plays Columbus and Pitt. Tampa plays a back to back Monday Tuesday, then plays Thursday and again on Saturday. Like I stated above, maximizing points and not benching players is essential to pickups. Thursday and Saturday are peak game days for the NHL, and you probably won’t be able to fit players in entirely. These are also not ideal matchups to begin with. No easy wins or teams with spotty goaltending.

Vancouver has numerous scoring threats, and has guys with the ability to get points in losses.

Players to target on Vancouver

Bo Horvat owned in 35% of Yahoo Leagues – Top line and powerplay,

Thomas Vanek Owned in 7% of Yahoo Leagues – perennial scorer with powerplay time and the Sedin’s are on his line.

Brock Boeser – Owned in 10% of Yahoo Leagues – Had an excellent pre-season and is on the first line, as well as top powerplay minutes. Significant potential if he receives the minutes.

In banger leagues, these guys are not necessarily your top choice, as they are not physical scorers. Del Zotto will be a solid pickup for the 4 games. Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo all have guys who will throw their weight around and I expect Del Zotto will enforce his physical presence. This doesn’t necessarily mean fighting, but definitely hitting and taking PIMS, Especially against Canadian rival Ottawa.

In 4 games against teams with young, or reorganized D cores will benefit the talented scorers of Vancouver. Vanek is a player that will somehow manage to get 40-50 points, and in a 4 game stretch he could definitely snag a few.

Horvat had a great breakout year, recording 52 points in 81 games.

Boeser is the biggest wildcard, has not been playing huge minutes in Vancouver, but will have linemates who can rack up points. He is your last option for a 4 game week.
