I am organizing these team by their introduction into the league, and then stating their best appearances. There is almost a third of the league that is without a Stanley cup in their franchise. Four of these teams have only been around for 20 years or less, so this isn’t a knock on any franchise, more a highlight of each team’s best season. I am not including the Vegas Golden Knights, for obvious reasons.

  • St. Louis Blues brought into the league in 1967-68. Best Season came when the Blues represented the Western Division (consisting exclusively of expansion teams) in the Stanley Cup Finals of 1968, 1969, and 1970.

  • Buffalo Sabres (1970-71) The Sabres have been to the Stanley Cup Final twice, losing to the Flyers in 1975 and Stars in 1999. Brett Hull kicked the puck in.

  • Vancouver Canucks (1970-71) The Canucks have been to the Stanley Cup Final three times, losing to the Islanders in 1982, the Rangers in 1994, and the Bruins in 2011. You may or may not remember the riot that ensued at the end of Game 7. That was wild.

  • Washington Capitals (1974-75) The Capitals have been to the Stanley Cup Final once, losing to the Red Wings in 1998. That being said they have won multiple Presidents trophies in recent memory.

  • San Jose Sharks  (1991-92) The Sharks played their first Stanley Cup final in 2015, but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Not much to say here but the Sharks had a stellar franchise and couldn’t pull the trigger in the playoffs, at their absolute peak.

  •  Ottawa Senators (1991 1992). The Sens began as an abysmal franchise that drafted, and imported talent in the past decade. One of the more successful teams on this list, they have made the finals once in the 2006-07 season. They lost in 5 games to the Ducks. In 2003 they won the Presidents trophy, with the best points total in the league. They have missed the playoffs only 8 times in their franchise history, with 4 of those occurring from 92-96 from poor expansion policies.

  • Florida Panthers (1993-94) The Panthers have been to the Stanley Cup Final once, losing to the Avalanche in 1996. This was the first season in Denver after moving from Quebec City. This was Roy’s first season with the Avalanche.

  • Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes (1996-97) The Coyotes have made one appearance in the Western Conference Final, but have never played in a Stanley Cup Final. As the Winnipeg Jets (1979-1996) the team never made it further than the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

  • Nashville Predators (1998-99) For the first time in franchise history, the Predators won a Stanley Cup Playoff series in 2012. The team was eliminated in round two. This season the Preds made it to the Stanley Cup finals, loosing in 6 games to Pittsburgh.

  • Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets (1999-2000) The franchise has never won a Stanley Cup Playoff series. Perennially in a late playoff spot, they often have played powerhouse teams that would go on to win divisions, or even conferences.

  • Minnesota Wild (2000-01) The Wild have made one appearance in the Conference Final, but have never played in a Stanley Cup Final.

  • Columbus Blue Jackets (2000-01) The Blue Jackets have never won a Stanley Cup Playoff round. In recent memory they have been eliminated against division rival Pittsburgh 2 times.
