With the expansion draft approaching, here is a list of players with updated statuses on their no trade clauses. This is the last period for players to waive their No Movement Clauses, which can play a significant role in protected lists for NHL teams.
Some of these players are out of their prime in the NHL and their last seasons are approaching. All these players have large contracts and may be unappealing to their team if these players have struggled. That being said, large contracts in the salary cap era are dangerous and some of these players carry a heavy cap hit and could force their teams to lose a key player. IE a young prospect simply because an old player doesn’t want to move again.
The NMC is an essential part of the draft and further muddies the water for teams looking to protect future talent. I’ve been wondering how in the world the Ducks haven’t asked Bieksa to waive his NMC, as they risk to lose Lindholm, Vatanen or Manson. I’m expecting a buyout in the next few days. Hartnell is a similar example in Columbus, as both players would never be drafted by Vegas.
