Kevin Durant Wins the NBA Finals MVP

Kevin Durant may have finally removed the chip from his shoulder. After leading the charge in Game 5 and winning his first NBA Championship in his second appearance, Durant was awarded the NBA Finals MVP. His performance alone tonight warranted consideration, but an examination of his stats on a per game basis proves he deserves this award.

Durant was a monster in this series, and was the best player on the best team. Some might argue Lebron did much more with much less, you have to take your hat off for Durant.

Here are Durant’s stats in the Finals. Truly remarkable.

Game Points Assists Rebounds
1 38 8 8
2 33 6 13
3 31 4 9
4 35 4 4
5 39 5 7
Average 35.2 5.4 8.2

The man averaged 35 points in the finals, and truly deserved the award. Along with his first Finals MVP, this is also Durant’s first Championship and Golden State’s second in three years.

Vegas odds for Finals MVP. This was the first time Finals MVP Odds were released prior to the NBA Finals.  Full analysis of this can be located here.

Kevin Durant – GSW 7/5
Stephen Curry – GSW 8/5
LeBron James – CLE 2/1
Draymond Green – GSW 17/2
Kyrie Irving – CLE 10/1
Kevin Love – CLE 15/1
Klay Thompson – GSW 25/1

Durant’s likelihood at Finals MVP is not a response to his game last evening. The odds makers in Vegas believed him to be the problem the Cavs couldn’t solve. And he is proving them right. Last season, the Cav’s completed the greatest comeback in basketball. With Durant on the Warriors, he was the missing piece that Cleveland could not solve.

Durant was just too long, too skilled and played on too good a team to not be properly utilized. Lebron, in tandem with Kyrie did all they could to try and outscore the trio of shooters on the Warriors, breaking records in the process. Much respect to the the King, he proved he is still the best player in the world, he just isn’t on the best team this year.

The NBA season has come to a close, with the Golden State Warriors claiming the NBA Championship once again.
